Unique Memory Verse Technique by Daren Stark Bethany, Oklahoma (This idea was taken from the book,"Spirit Bank." I teach children scripture verses in Sign Language. I learn the appropriate signs needed from a book that I checked out at our local library. To make the lesson more interesting. I dress up as a Grandpa character wearing overalls stuffed with pillows, a gray wig, and lean on a cane. I demonstrate the signs as I recite the verse. Then I ask the children to recite and "sign" with me until they learn the verse. ( If you don't want to do this idea as a live character, you could do it with a human-arm puppet as shown above and teach the signs with him to the children as a puppet routine)

Gertrude-passing visitor Tommy: Hey, kids....I'm Tommy Tuttle and this is our version of "Truth or Pay." We need some contestants. Merv, why don't you call down a few. Merv: (offstage) All right Tommy. Come on down, Betty BeGood. Come on down, Danny DoRight. Come on down, Sally SweetChild. You're our three contestants tonight. Tommy: Boy, oh boy, this is really great! Now for our first question....Betty BeGood, you have just lied to your mother and she thinks you went to school, but you didn't. Does God still love you? Betty: Yes. (applause) Tommy: That's right! God DOES still love you! Now, Danny DoRight. You had a big test in school today in History. You cheated off your neighbor's paper. Does God still love you? Danny: Yes. (applause) Tommy: That's right! God DOES still love you! Now, Sally SweetChild. You saw a quarter on someone's tray in the lunchroom and you took it when they weren't looking. Does God still love you? Sally: Yes. (applause) Tommy: That's right! God DOES still love you! Now, all contestants, listen very carefully. Does God love what you've done? Berry, Danny & Sally: No. (applause) Tommy: That's right! God HATES the sin but loves YOU the sinner! Thanks Betty BeGood, Danny DoRight and Sally SweetChild. Weren't they great? Let's give them a hand (big hand sign) (contestants exit). Gertrude: (enters) What's going on here? Tommy: We've just played "Truth or Pay". Gertrude: But what in the world are you telling these boys and girls? Tommy: The Truth! Gertrude: The Truth? You told them that it's okay to lie, cheat and steal! Tommy: No, I didn't. You weren't listening. What I told them was that lying, cheating and stealing are wrong, but God still loves them. They can't do anything that will cause God not to love them. But what He doesn't love is the evil things we do. We will have to pay. The wages of sin is death. Gertrude: Well, what can these boys and girls do when they're tempted to do things that are wrong? Tommy: They need to ask God for strength not to do them and He'll help them. Gertrude: Well, you were telling them right after all, Tommy Tuttle. Tommy: You'd better believe it. Okay, that's all the time we have tonight. Until next time, this is Tommy Tuttle saying....if you're not truthful today. you'll have to pay for it later. Goodnight!

THE HYPOCRITE by Pastor Terry Jenks Hinsdale, New York (Terry Jenks will receive $80.00 credit toward puppets purchased for his submission of the script below) Matthew 15:1-20 Puppets Needed: Benjamin, the Pharisee Heart Puppet (Benjamin enters) Benjamin: Shalom! I am Benjamin and I have come here today to share my rich religious heritage with you. I am a member of the religious party called the Pharisees. (Heart puppet enters) Benjamin: I am of the seed of Abraham. I am a Hebrew among Hebrews. Heart: I fast two times a week.... Benjamin: Excuse me, but I can tell my own story. Heart: I didn't want you to forget anything. Benjamin: I'm sure I can tell my own religious history without any help from....I don't seem to know what your name is. Have we ever met? Heart: We are very close. I'm your heart. I'm not surprised that you have not recognized me. You've ignored me for years. Benjamin: My Heart? Wait a minute! I can't be around any internal organs. They are unclean! Heart: I'm not your physical heart that pumps your blood. I'm your Biblical heart. Benjamin: Oh, you mean you are my seat of affections, the fount of my emotions and my deepest feelings. Heart: That's right and you were right about me being unclean. Benjamin: That's impossible. I'm more religious than anyone I know. Heart: That's your problem. That's why I'm so dirty. Benjamin: You don't know what you're talking about. I give titles on everything I own. I faithfully pray to God three times a day. I observe the Sabbath faithfully. Heart: So you keep the Law, do you? How about the Ten Commandments? Benjamin: What of them? I've kept them perfectly. Name one and I'll show you how righteous I am. Heart: All right, how about, "Honor your Father and Mother." Benjamin: I was a perfect child and I always honored my parents. Heart: I'll leave the past alone but what about now? Arent your parents in poor health and on the verge of losing their home? Benjamin: I can't help them. I've dedicated all that I own to the Temple and to God. I can't break my vow to God. Heart: But what about your responsibility according to the Law to take care of your parents? Benjamin: My hands are tied. I'd like to help them, but I can't. Heart: Now you just broke the ninth commandment. Benjamin: What are you talking about? Heart: You lied. The truth is you only dedicated all your possessions to get out of helping your parents. You are not only guilty of breaking the fifth commandment, but you are also guilty of lying and you are filled with covetousness. Benjamin: How dare you? You can't speak to me that way! Heart: You are a hypocrite. God wants you to worship Him from the heart, not just give Him lip service. Isaiah was right about you when he wrote, your heart is far away from God. Benjamin: I am a dedicated follower of God. Heart: God wants you to love Him from the heart. He wants you to sing praise to Him from the heart. He wants you to give to Him from the heart, not just because you have to. Benjamin: But I do love God. Heart: No, you love yourself and how much better you are than everybody else. Your belief in God is merely head knowledge. It's time you repented of your sin and believed from your heart. God wants to give you a new clean heart--a heart that is willing to obey God out of love. Benjamin: The prophet Jeremiah did promise a new heart in Jeremiah 31:33 and Moses wrote of it in the book of Deuteronomy 30:6 when he spoke of "the circumcision of the heart." Heart: Jesus touched on that when He described it to another Pharisee named Nicodemus. "Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Benjamin: I've heard that Jesus died on the cross for the sin of the world. Some say He is the Messiah. Heart: Forget who others say He is. Who do you say He is, Benjamin? Benjamin: I say He is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. Heart: Finally you are speaking from your heart. You are not far from God's salvation. (Benjamin & heart exit)
